Am I in Love or am I Crazy? What Research Says About The Brain in Love

By Ann Bradley Am I In Love Or Am I Crazy? You aren't crazy, but your brain may look as if you are. What does that mean? It means that recent research has shown that brain scans of those in love are similar to those of drug addicts and those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The Research Helen Fisher of Rutgers University has conducted research in the area of the brain/love connection. She says, "Everything that is going on in the brain, everything that happens with romantic love has a chemical basis." She uses MRI machines to scan the brains of those in love and finds the dopamine system, the pleasure system - is different in those in love. In those with "a broken heart" people showed activity in other parts of the brain - those that have to do with risk taking, anger and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). And in another study, researchers found those in love had lower serotonin levels in their blood, just like people with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Another researcher, Donnavan Yisrael from Stanford University, says the brain in love is like the brain on cocaine. WOW! That's powerful. Cocaine impacts dopamine, just as Fisher found. What This Means About Recognizing "The Right One" and "The Jerk" Would you knowingly make a decision of great import if you are on drugs? Or sick? Of course you wouldn't. You would wait until you stopped doing drugs or got better. What you need to do is recognize 2 important concepts: 1) learning what a 'red flag' means and 2) realizing that novelty wears off in everyone over time. A 'red flag' is a warning sign that "this one has problems". If he's too good to be true, he probably is, if he controls, bullies, and drinks too much, this is a red flag. If she is always breaking dates, putting you down, or lying, this is a red flag. Verbal abuse from anyone is never acceptable. DO NOT THINK, "this is the best I can do." You deserve better, and you can get it. Do not be fooled because your brain is "in love". 'Novelty wears off' means - WAIT. What is exciting and fun about your love interest today can bother you tomorrow. After a few months, the one who always tells you what to wear will not be seen as caring but as controlling. The one who is always late (and you are punctual) may make you resent her. Or maybe not. But don't make decisions in the first exciting blush of love. It's the love drug talking!
