Will Your Business Growth Dreams Come True This Year?

By Guy Richards A note from us Just before Christmas I got an early gift I told few people about. I hesitated to share the news with people because I felt awkward making the announcement but it sort of ties in with this weeks newsletter topic, so here goes: Ive been working on a book for just over a year. I got brave and had a few friends read sections of it and they had nice things to say; but frankly, I didnt believe them. I figured they were just being nice. I needed to find someone whod be objective. I learned of a writers group who would (for a fee of course) read something you wrote and give you feedback. The hook was that a published author would read the work and give his or her 2 cents on it. So I sent a section of my first chapter and waited. And waited. And waited. Several weeks later I got my response back and it was really good. It included comments like practically flawless and a pleasure to read. I nearly burst into tears in the UPS store where my mailbox is. I then went to the gourmet candy store, bought a couple of bags of treats and shared the news (and goodies) with Guy, Ryan, and Bo. There must be some dream or big goal you have for yourself and for your business. Dont let another day go by before you take action to make it a reality. Your business may be successful but is it really where you want it to be? Make 2007 the year you take action to reach your big goal and make your dreams come true. Will your business growth dreams come true this year? Every quarter you look at the numbers and things are going well. You feel good about your business. Youre successful, and youve been going along like this for several years now. Maybe many years. But success can lull us into a comfortable place where we become fearful of making changes. We begin to subscribe to the if it aint broke, dont fix it philosophy. But is the business everything you had hoped it would be when you started it? Think back to the dream you had when you began. Do you have the market share you really could have or are you settling for what you have? Do you have the brand recognition you need to be the dominant player in your segment or would that require extending yourself further? Do you produce the highest quality product or service possible or are you settling for pretty good? Are you the Disney World in your segment delighting customers so they tell others to buy from you, or are you the comfortable, yet unexciting solution? Heres how you can inspire yourself, and subsequently your staff, to grow the business, expand your reputation in the market, and come closer to making your business dreams come true. 1. Tell them your dream.
Get the executive team together and tell them your biggest dream for the business. Dont water the dream down. If you started your business with the fantasy of becoming the Apple of your market segment, tell them. And use vivid language that people can relate to. Even people who dont own an iPod understand that Apple is an innovative and dominant player in their market. 2. Ask your team to help you achieve your goal.
Dont tell them to. Ask. People want to be a part of something, but most people dont enjoy being told what to do. Its not inspiring. We do our best work when our hearts get plugged into our brains, and thats what happens when we get inspired. Ask them to help you inspire your whole company to action. Dont tell them to. Ask. 3. Share your dream with the entire organization
Have some big event to kickoff your sharing of the dream with the entire team. If you run a 24-hour operation, youll need to do it several times to allow everyone to participate. Consider putting a video of the event on your company intra-net, or give DVDs or videos of the event after its over so people can watch it again and even share it with their families. You might think thats silly, but when the folks at home understand whats going on at work they become more supportive of whats required to make it happen, thus lowering the stress your staffers feel. Why does sharing the dream with others help us achieve it? The obvious answer is we cant reach the ultimate goal without them. The other big issue is we find it very easy to make excuses to ourselves about why we cant achieve something; but we find it almost impossible to disappoint someone else or let someone else down. Once the dream is out of your heart and into the hearts and minds of your team, it becomes that big goal that can pull your team together and grow the business to the heights you first fantasized about. Your next step: Go for a walk outside and reflect on your original dream for the business to pull out the fantasy you have in your heart. Movement stimulates thought and creativity so dont just put your feet up on the desk.
